A documentary series exploring the journey to restore food sovereignty.
Imagine a world where every community has the power to grow its own food, where children know the story of the food they eat and where their food comes from, and where our relationship with the land is rooted in justice, respect, and belonging. This is the vision behind From Soil to Soul, a documentary series created by a diverse team of filmmakers, farmers, and environmental advocates determined to change the food system for good.
From Soil to Soul addresses the pressing need for food sovereignty amidst the risks of climate change, corporate dominance, and resource scarcity threatening our food systems. This series dives into the complexities of historical inequities, cultural heritage, and social injustices within food production, highlighting regenerative agriculture, indigenous foodways, food policies, and community-driven initiatives.

We have started filming the stories of resilient farmers and food justice warriors across Los Angeles and the Bay Area, and have shot 15+ interviews so far. We have outlined 8 episodes, and currently looking for funding to bring the full impact of From Soil to Soul to life. See From Soil To Soul's website for their mini stories.
In September 2024, From Soil to Soul hosted a special screening of the pilot episode, ‘Food Justice in LA’, delving into the heart of community-led food sovereignty initiatives in Los Angeles. The film highlighted the powerful stories of several changemakers in the LA food system.
A panel discussion followed featuring the incredible individuals in the film, including Dr. Sherridan Ross, founder of Compton Community Garden; Darin Imani Diggs, founder of Imani Gardens; Matthew Teutimez, tribal biologist of the Kizh Gabrieleño tribe; and Talia Dotson, regenerative designer and CEO of Akoben & Co. A seed swap, hosted by Shift Our Ways Collective and Black Thumb Farms, allowed attendees to take home seeds to further cultivate their connection to food sovereignty.
